I called our poison control yesterday to see what they had to say and they said it did
not sound like an airborne virus, but an anticoagulant, then they asked about
cyanide (rat poisoning). The woman on the phone said the only virus she knew of
that caused bleeding, etc. was ebola, so she said it definitely sounded like an
anticoagulant and said calling the state health officer is definitely in order.

[Moderator's Note: according to the CDC pages on hemolytic viruses -- which I got
part way through the other night -- there are several forms of hemolytic viruses
which humans and rodents get (and *possibly* bats for one or more) but these are
NOT caught by members of Carnivora on the testing which has been done so far.
They include things like Hanta which is hemolytic for lungs, Marburg, Ebola, etc. As
you know, ferrets are not rodents but are in Carnivora so don't have those same risk
factors. Besides, there would have to be exposure to such a disease by any
vulneverable species. Note also that airborne is not a common route for at least
some of these but I had to sleep sometime so didn't finish reading...]
