Ella,
If the carafate is alleviating the discomfort for Boo-Boo while he eats then I would
definately keep him on it. I would insist on it. My ferret was treated for ulcers
before and the carafate seemed to help. According to the vet, this response to the
carafate was a good indicator of the presence of ulcers. Carafate is not going to hurt
Boo, so I would keep giving it to him. It will help the healing process.
I believe you are right about helicobacter infections. From what I have learned, it
can take several monthe to eradicate the bacteria and a lengthy round of antibiotics
is sometimes necessary.
If Boo becomes resistant to Clavamox, ask your vet about trying
Biaxin(clarythromycin). It has become a common protocol for the treatment of
helicobacter/ulcers. Biaxin is supposed to work faster than Clavamox(amoxicillin)
alone.
