Subject: Boo-Boo's blood test results

Just spoke to the doc and they are waiting on an 'expert consult'
about Boo-Boo's blood test results. I don't have a copy of the
results just yet, but I'm planning on getting a copy when we go back.

While they say he does not have insulinoma, they said two things were
noted as "significant":

1. Blood sugar is elevated: diabetes indication

2. BUNN values indicate kindey disease

They also mentioned blood values that indicated an elevation
(leukocytes, I believe... he talked rather fast) which he said is
most likely in response to the other problems.

They are waiting on this expert consult with another vet that they
said will be with "Not an ordinary Joe vet," but he said he was going
to recommend right now that we come in and learn to give sub-q
fluids; we'll be doing that twice per week. And as for the diabetes
we're not sure yet, and he's waiting for the consult on everything to
discuss therapies etc. regarding this.

In the meantime, since his BS is elevated, should I stop all Nutra-
Cal supps since it's mostly sugar? I was told by someone that
diabetes in ferrets means feeding them food with little to no sugars
and avoiding sugary treats and supplements.

There is 1/2 tube of Nutra-Cal in his chicken gravy, but that made a
huge pot of food, so I'm hoping this means it's relatively low in
sugar.

The kidney disease scares the begeezus out of me, and I'm not sure
what to think about that one. But to the diabetes I HAVE to say
this: NO ONE listened to me when I told them what I suspected over
TWO months ago!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You guys may even remember me mentioning that he was
drinking a ton of water and peeing puddles so big that it looked like
a large cat just peed there (before he started acting sick but was losing weight).
AND, the best part is: I told
that "senior veterinarian" at the last visit TWO months ago that he
was doing this and even asked her what the chances were of having
diabetes. She stated that diabetes in ferrets is very rare and most
likely not his problem. She said if he didn't get better to come
back and they would run a full panel on him. He got way sicker, of
course, and then showed signs of ulcer in the exam room, so they
didn't even do the bloodwork then because the problem was "evident."

I TOLD them again when he began to lose weight,
drink tons of water, and pee huge puddles. I even
harped on my fiance, Mike, about this. He kept going with the
doctor, which most on average would do----trust the doctor. I even
mentioned that I come from a family with SO many diabetics that it's
easier to count which ones of us DON'T have it than the ones who do and that Boo-
Boo reminded me of those symptoms prior to treatment.

Anyway. I'll let you guys know what the 'expert' says. But I would
love some advice about his eating since it appears he's diabetic.

also, could the kidney disease be a result of the untreated
diabetes????
