Subject: Serious plaque problem do N-bones really help?

My boy Norbert is having some teeth problems. I thought he had a problem with his eye, it was all watery so off to the vet we went. Turns out it's his teeth-really yellow with plaque and his gums are inflamed. We started a course of amoxy and using some sort of animal dental gel on his gums. My vet suggests getting the teeth scraped which involves putting him under. I'm deathly afraid of putting a 6 1/2 yr old under. I guess it's going to have to be done but in the mean time what opinions do the experts here have on the n-bones for tooth and gum care? It says on the package that it promotes healthy teeth and gums but I know alot of these companies will say anything to get you to purchase their stuff.
