Ella,
I agree with Caity. Always get a second opinion when you have gut feelings of your
own. I had a vet that I took my ferret to, try to disprove facts about ferrets that I
had documentation of in literature written by ferret experts. She diagnosed my
ferret with lymphoma based on an ultrasound, and she was going to treat him for it.
I did the research and made suggestions on other possible causes for his enlarged
lymph nodes and spleenomegaly. She said that only something malignant could
cause it.
The more research I did, the more I realized that she did not know much about
ferrets, and I took my ferret to another vet. They did tests and confirmed that it was
NOT lymphoma. It turned out to be what I was trying to tell her in the first place.
She had also told me that my ferret was anemic, and the new vet confirmed he was
not..his RBC was low because of the gas they used to sedate him with.
All I am saying is, second opinions are sometimes very valuable.
You should do what Caity suggested, bring in posts or documentation about issues
you have, including posts from this list. I brought literature in for my ferret's first
vet, trying to educate her. She was a little unreceptive and seemed frustrated, and
thats when I knew it was time to change vets.
Don't worry about how you sound to your vet.. There are so many effective
treatments available for many ferret problems (some of the less ferret knowledgable
vets do not even know about), and you have a right to make sure that your baby is
getting the best possible treatment for his condition, and you have a right to
question your vet's approach,
I wish you the best for Boo-Boo,
Tara
