Hi, Andrea, and everyone else,
The fact that you lost a ferret due to right adrenal
surgery does NOT mean you made the wrong decision.
Each and every surgery has risks. So long as you went
to a really good ferret vet with experience in right
adrenal surgeries and aftercare you did what was most
likely to give your ferret a cure from the disease.
Three of my ferrets have had right adrenal surgeries
over the years. One, Podo, had it at age seven and a
half. He lived to be just about 10.
Right adrenal surgeries are difficult becuase the
gland is attached to the vena cava. I would make very
certain the vet who is going to do the surgery has
lots of experience and is comfortable that he or she
can fully remove the gland. That's the big issue.
Our vet in North Carolina used to say that if you left
any of the gland in you also left the disease in.
The usual disclaimer applies: I am not a vet, just a
moderately experienced ferret owner who has been where
you are before.
All the best,
Caity and the fantastic four
