I must admit that I find this now to be very confusing. I don't recall seeing any
possible cases of DIM that had puss listed as one of the symptoms. Correct me if
I'm wrong, but isn't paralysis one of the major symptoms that's been found? This
ferret is lethargic, and not "yet" showing any signs of paralysis.
My concern is that what has been previously disclosed to the ferret community
regarding details of DIM has changed, and yet the changes have not been made
public. If those that are trying to find the source of DIM are not notifying us of
these changes, how are we to know what to look for in order to assist them with
finding the cause? Is there a website that the general public can access regarding
DIM that is continuously updated with any changes?
[Co-Moderator's Note: puss results of aspirates and removal of nodes have been
seen since the beginning when cellulitis is present as it is with a number of these
cases. You'll find "puss" or "melted appearing tissue" or both in a number of the
past cases in the FHL Archives at
http://fhl.sonic-weasel.org
It is not a paralysis per say which is typically seen as much as an incredibly
pronounced weakness -- more of a muscular effect than a naurological one (though
some ferrets have later had neurological damage either from extreme fever or
secondary to heart infection. One team considers the disease to be primarily a
disease of muscle tissues, with some of the skin sorea sometimes seen possibly
being due to piloerctor muscles infected.
Updates can be found by reading the FHL Archives or by going to
http://www.miamiferret.org/fhc
or the AFA site. One of the vets working on this is planning to write an update after
a confusing report has been checked into enough since it might have useful data. --
