I'm not a vet but I do know that some ferrets tend to be very vocal while others don't make noise at all. Some make actual noises while others just make breathing and panting noises.

My little girl, Sonic, is very vocal and often makes a huffing noise (ferret laughs; similar to what you describe) when she is playing. She makes a clicking noise when she "lectures" someone or something. And she "dooks" when she dances. My boy, Chewy, barks like a dog when he's scared and makes a sucking noise in the back of his throat (like a baby nursing) when he is content but doesn't make any other noises.

My point is that ferrets often make noises and the noise you describe doesn't sound like anything to be concerned about. If he's eating and drinking well, playing and sleeping fine, and his gums and tongue are bright pink and not white or blue, then there is nothing to worry about. If you want to make sure everything is clear, push gently on his cheeks and he'll open his mouth so you can see down his throat.

Anyway, I picked him up and I heard this noise. You know how if you have air or something trapped in your throat, sometimes it escapes. He had that noise twice when I picked him up, Well, then during play time a different night, he was running around chasing after some other fuzzy, and he did the same thing.
