Since he is currently being treated for an ulcer it would be best to avoid Pred when possible, and this is a situation where it is possible.
Ulcers can have a helicobacter infection as their cause. Carafate is a common bandaging med used, and there are two common antibiotic combos used:
Amoxi and Metroidazole/Flagyl plus a source of bismuth such as to boost their actions
Biaxin and Amoxi
If memory serves Tresaderm also will help tackle any secondary fungal ear infection, but it is important to keep the ears clean so that the meds can get to the infestations.
