Hi, Chloe, and everyone else,
I agree with your vet about doing a Tennessee Panel.
With no other symptoms (aggressiveness, weight loss,
etc...) other than hair loss on the tail you may not
be dealing with adrenal at all. The Tennessee Panel
may let you know for sure.
I do not agree with your vet about doing lupron
instead of surgery if your vet is otherwise healthy,
strong, and a good surgical candidate. Go through the
archives at http://fhl.sonic-weasel.org Look at what
the vets on list have said. Surgery is the only cure.
Lupron relieves symptoms and is a great choice if
your vet knows of some reason why your ferret is not
up to surgery.
I have had seven of the ferrets I've owned over the
years have adrenal surgery. Two of those ferrets
eventually had their second gland out and the other
five never did. That's nine adrenal surgeries. All
went well and all but one where more was going on had
very good results. Nyssa is approaching four years
since her surgery with no recurrence. Avon lived four
years with no recurrence after his.
YMMV, of course. I am not a vet, just a ferret owner
who has been where you are more times that I would
have liked.
All the best,
Caity and the fantastic four
