Well, by now it's been about 10 days so it should be just about time to remove them anyway. Does the incision look pretty healed? If so, I wouldn't worry too much about it at this point. One thing to keep in mind also is that there are usually 3 layers of stitches, two internal, and the one layer you can see. Though you still don't want them pulling out the external stitches, it's not as bad as it sounds.

My vet uses all internal stitches. I love it because there are no exposed stitches for them to play with and there are no stitches to remove later. He may even put a little glue over the outside. I'm not sure; I'll have to ask him. That's not to say that I don't watch the area or that it can't re-open. I do keep a close eye on them for a good week to 10 days afterward. After that, things are pretty much healed.

Sounds like you're over the worst of it now.
