HISTORY: This 2 yo female ferret developed a mammary mass andhas had unusual
estrous cycles. The vulva never seems to enlarge much, and estrus does not last
long. The mammary mass was removed and the ferret was spayed at that time. The
uterus was extremely turgid and tortuous. The walls were thickened, and the
ovaries appeared grossly normal.
CLINICAL DIAGNOSIS: Endometrial hyperplasia and mammory gland adenoma.
GROSS: Received in formalin are four tissues to 2 cm in greatest dimension that are
processed in one.
MICROSCOPIC: Uterus: The endometrium has marked hyperplasia of the mucosa.
Epithelium lining the hyperplastic glands is hypertrophied and vacuolated. Ovary:
One of the ovaries has a mature corpus luteum. Both ovaries have follicles in
various stages of development. Mammory Mass: The Mammary mass represents a
focus of fibroepithelial hyperplasia and is comprised of tubuloalveolar patterns of
well differentiated but hyperplastic mammary glands delineated by narrow zones of
fibrous connective tissue.
DIAGNOSIS: 1. Marked endometrial hyperplasia, uterus.
2. Fibroepitheleal hyperplasia, mammary gland.
COMMENT: Histologic changes in the examined tissues are consistent with
hormonal derangements. All changes are rteversible. The mammary lesion is
essentially identical to the hyperplastic mammary lesions seen in domestic cats
treated with estrogenic compounds. I woul be interested in any photos that may be
available of the mamary mass or uterus.
