Ferrets often get hiccups when they are anxious/nervous or scared. I can actually trigger hiccups in my girl by sneaking up behind her and clapping my hands real loud. If I make a sudden movement at my boy and surprise him, he can get the hiccups. And both had hiccups for a few days after I moved into a new home.

Noises and changes in environment can trigger hiccups.

However, I am not a vet and if it more of a gagging than a hiccup, you may want to have his throat checked.
