my ferret snoopy was rushed to the vet friday because of excessive thirst and loss of
appetite. she was found to have a glucose level of 500 and high liver enzymes.they
brought down her glucose into the 100 hundreds , but the vet said her temp is
slowly dropping she's not active and she wont eat.
in august she had one of her adrenals removed along with a cyst in her abdomen
that was causing a high temperature. last month we got her a melatonin implant
because her vulva was still swollen and she lost all her fur.
when the vet called and gave us this news today it sounded like if shes in the same
condition or worse tommorow that we should maybe put her to sleep. we've had 5
others die of cancer and never could put them to sleep, so we are in agony right
now!
right now i cant help but think the melatonin implant that i was pushing for has
caused this, but the vet says hes never read anything suggesting melatonin could
cause this.
is there any hope for her? please give us some thoughts and other possibilities!
thanks rob n lori!
[Co-Moderator's Note: with these symptoms I wouldn't discount infection of the
pancreas if ferrets do that. Hopefully, someone more knowledgeable will chime in.
Certainly, in humans this combo can be seen: high sugar and thirst of diabetes
(Watch her in case she now has that.) plus an infection. An old human friend
became a diabetic this way -- exact same symptoms -- due to damage to his
pancreas when he had to be hospitalized with an extremely bad influenza which
almost took him decades ago. Basically, I'd be inclined to consider anything which
can raise havoc with the pancreas. --SDC]
