Good news in that we heard from someone who knows more than I ever will, Dr. Jerry Murray. He writes:
It sure sounds like this ferret has diabetes!
The high glucose (~500), and excessive thirst are classic
signs of diabetes. The added signs of illness suggest
diabetic ketoacidosis.
This is indeed a serious condition and possibly a fatal
situation. IV fluids, insulin, and antibiotics are indicated for
this ferret. Feed a/d and/or baby food to increase the appetite.
NO melatonin did not cause this problem. Melatonin is very
safe for ferrets.
