Trimming a ferret down is similar to anything else. Fewer calories and more exercise.

Check with your vet about giving a higher protein/lower carb food. Place is food where he has to exert energy to get to it. More out of cage time with interactive games will help.

I have had older ferrets get heavy due to heart and tumor problems that produced fluids in the abdomen. I have also had older ferrets that layed down a lot of extra fat due to health conditions although they ate very little. Advanced tumors will also give a wide girth. Our little guy that will be 7 next month has increased in size tremendously in the last month. We suspect Lymphoma.

If your vet has given him a clean bill of health, I would think about calorie and exertion tactics.
