Hi,

What Big Al is going through is a severe anaphylactic
reaction to his distemper shot. I saw exactly the
same symptoms with Podo's reaction to his distemper
shot when he was eight. Our vet did what yours did
plus kept in in an oxygen tent until he was breathing
better. Podo fully recovered but it was quite the
scare.

When Nyssa had an anaphylactic reaction (also to
ravies, age two) she had both bloody diarrhea dn
bloody vomit and then went into shock. Again, your
vet did what ours did. Nyssa is still here five years
later.

Yes, anaphylactic reactions can be fatal but it sounds
like your vet is doing exactly what needs to be done
to pull Big Al through. I agree with the other person
who posted: you have an excellent vet.

I have one ferret, Lady Ayeka, who reacted to Merial
Purevax but does not react to Fervac-D. Purevax still
has a much lower reaction rate and is the vaccine of
choice except in situations like Big Al's and Lady
Ayeka's. Your vet will undoubtedly never give Big Al
Purevax again but may want to give him a different
vaccine. That's worked for Ayeka and may well work
for him.

I wish you and Big Al the best of luck.

Caity and the super six
