We also get some of our ferrret meds from our pharmacist, and there used to=
be a pharmasit list member who gave great advise which appears in the arrc=
hives.

For instance: besides some meds needing those micriwaving precautions ther=
e are ones that need protection from heat, some that need protection from c=
old, some that can't be taken with certain foods, some that can't be frozen=
, some that have a very short shelf life once they are mixed with water, so=
me that create a need to avoid strenuous exercise because they can weaken c=
onnective tissue (so for those who like their iron: clean and jerks or pre=
sses certainly are out when taking them, and that includes the athletic fer=
rets here if they even can have those particular meds), some that must be p=
rotected from light, some that should be taken with foods, some that can be=
taken during the same bout but not at the same time, some that can't be ta=
ken during the same bout of illness, some that need to be avoided with cert=
ain medical conditions, some which should never be taken with certain herba=
l meds or with certain over the counter meds, some that are coated because =
they need protection from slaiva or water, some which can be cut while bein=
g reasonably sure that the dose is evenly spread (the ones which have the s=
erration groove in them) but others that need to be crushed completely, mix=
ed well and then measured to be sure of getting enough of the medication (t=
he ones which do not have a cutting groove in them)...

I have gotten in the habit of reading up on meds whenever we, our elderly r=
elatives, and our ferrets get ones we don't already know the precautions fo=
r and sometimes I do a refresher. Those books I mentioned are treasures, s=
o are some much more expensive ones like the Physicians Desk Refs (There ar=
e also PDRs for supplements and herbals, BTW.), and the internet has a numb=
er of reputable resources like the manufacturer's sites, the FDA, the USDA =
a number of university sites, etc. There's a site from Yale which is getti=
ng a bit old which does a number of veterinary drugs -- some in detail -- a=
nd certainly Mike and others have mentioned more. (I love using Google.com=
when the search can be narrowed enough.) I am sure that others can recomm=
end resources!
