This seems to be a common problem. I'm constantly chastising my vet when the receptionist calls me the day before and reminds me to take their food away at 9 p.m. the day before surgery. As you said, it's important they understand it is a ferret and listen to what your vet tells you, not some person who simply does office work (no offense to office workers!).
