Thanks for pointing to Angiostrongylus vasorum, but I am not in the UK ;-)
A. vasorum is not endemic in my area either (Belgium), and when talking about "heartworm" I meant Dirofilaria immitis, sorry, I should have made this more clear.
I understand that an animal can only be infected with A. vasorum by eating certain infected gastropods that serve as an intermediate host, so if Lucinda's ferrets don't go outside, she shouldn't worry about this too much, even if she would be in an endemic area.
