Now by chance did your vet warn you that for the first few days after a
melatonin implant the ferret may become very lethargic?
It is a natural reaction while the body regulates itself to the new
melatonin levels. Much like the body needs to adapt to pred and other
steroidal drugs.
Three of my ferrets had melatonin implants put in on friday (3-11), two of
them also had lupron shots 2 weeks ago (4 month depot). Two of them have been
sleeping more since the implants but one (she has had two lupron shots so
far) is extremely lethargic and will only eat chicken baby food if I feed it to
her. She is weak and it seems to take all the energy she can muster just to
go potty. They were previously given 1 mg of melatonin daily (stopped for one
week prior to the implants), they had been on the oral dose for over a year.
I was wondering if it would still be normal to be so tired since they had
already been on melatonin for some time.
I have another question to ask. The ferret who is extremely lethargic also
has a rash. She broke out with this rash only a few days ago. My vet isn't
really sure what it is and only gave me clavamox (which he said was for her skin
and also to prevent infection (because she had torn her tonail a bit) I am
wondering if the rash is really blood, like purpura or petechiae. She did have
uclers in the past and now tonight she has passed some tarry stools and her
gums are somewhat pale. I am going to be taking her to the vet first thing in
the morning. Is this something I should be worried about? I started her on
carafate tonight (we had some left from when she was on it before)
