Ulrike,

Reno is definitely anemic (norm is 46-57%). Why didn't they do a red cell count? You
need to know if his anemia is regenerative or not. W/ renal disease it's usually non-
regeneratice bec. like Mike said the kidneys are not producing the EPO which
basically stimulates the bone marrow to make RBC's. Then you know whether
epogen (or EPO) would even work on him. Did they run a urine sample? You said the
urine was insufficiently concentrated but what exactly was the Specific Gravity and
what did the microscopic evaluation show? (usually the SG is in the range of 1.010
-1.020 w/ renal disease).

About the transfusion, I've never seen one done that way...not to say it's not but
usually its not. Anyway, first find out why he's anemic (ie:kidey related, RBC
parasites, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, etc...)so he can be treated properly.

Last but not least, it is painful to hear your vet has no time to figure out whats
wrong w/ Reno. I might consider finding another vet who will give Reno the loving
care and attention he deserves. Just my oppinion.

Oh, and the weakness is most likely from the anemia. Supportive care is crucial now.
Are you giving subQ fluids at home?
