Subject: Constipation or urinary issue?

How can you tell if a ferret is straining to poop or to urinate?

Pippin is 3 years old and has IBD; he's been on pred since he was 8 months
old. He gets 5mg every 3 days. Tonight (Sunday night), he began showing signs
of discomfort around 9:00 p.m.; he was fine and very active earlier in the day.
He went to the litterbox repeatedly, and was obviously straining each time.
His belly was damp afterwards, so I'm guessing some urine passed, but no poops.

He's still eating his baby food, and I gave him a dose of ferretlax. He's
pretty finicky, and doesn't chew stuff up, so a digestive track blockage wit him
seems unlikely. How can I tell where he's straining from? I've been through a
lot with this little guy, and can't lose him now. I plan on calling his vet in
the morning, but any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
