Prednisolone is one of the possible treatments for IBD, yes. If these are just ocassional bouts, though, I'd be more inclined to think in terms of him maybe getting into something, or an allergy. Definitely get a work-up including CBC with Chemistry Panel, and keep notes. On the days when it happens put down date, time, what he did that day, what he got into, food given, treats given, amounts, etc. You may find a pattern. Also, search for hidden stashes which may be getting eatten when spoiled, and consider looking in the feces itself for foreign material. One of our's who did that turned out to be eating holes into a blanket we had under a bed. For some reason that one item (and a sock she once got) were appetyizing when other cloth wasn't. He gut did not appreciate the cloth and the only way to find it was to smooch an entire accident ina ziplock bag while looking through it at a bright light. Bits of the blanket showed up.

(Today my brain is about as sharp as pound of wet liver due to having a bug, so take that into account when weighing what I wrote.)
