One nasty side effect of pediapred (prednisolone) is
stomach upset, usually in the form of diarrhea. We've
seen it with three of our ferrets (Ker Avon, Kodo, and
Nyssa).

Nyssa can tolerate pediapred (prednisolone) up to
about half the dose Cody gets, no more. We are
treating her for lymphoma so our vet added an
injectable anabolic steroid (vetalog) and also added
mylanta to help her stomach as she was also showing
signs of ulcers. That worked for her.

In both Avon and Podo's case they maxed out on the
amount of pediapred they could tolerate when treating
them for insulinoma without being able to get their
blood glucose up. Our choice in both cases was to opt
for surgery. That wasn't an easy or obvious choice
for Podo as he was eight at the time. In both cases
the surgery was the right answer. Podo, BTW, lived
for almost two more years.

So... you might want to see if a smaller dose of
pediapred is adequate. If so you might get rid of the
diarrhea that way. That's all it really takes for
Nyssa. If a smaller dose won't work you will have to
look into alternative medication or treatment options.

Good luck to you and to Cody.

All the best,
Caity and the fantastic five
