I have had two ferrets have kidneys removed and they both did wonderfully. Bessie died much later from unrelated causes. Sinclair is doing great. His left kidney was removed in the sumer of 2003, nearly 2 years ago.

I am wondering why your vet thinks this surgery would take several hours. I don't recall it lasting any longer than any other major surgery. In fact, Bessie's was removed as part of her adrenal surgery, along with a liver lobe. The right adrenal gland had spread to the kidney and liver.

Sinclair's was strictly a kidney removed because it was encapsulated in a tumor.
