Since melatonin is a hormone that's naturally produced by the body, it doesn't seem likely that giving melatonin orally is the cause of what you're seeing, unless the product is bad in some way. From my article on melatonin... "In mink, doses as high as 78.2 mg produced no adverse side effects in adults, and doses as high as 124 mg/kg produced no side effects in kits."

That's 78-124 times as much as we typically give ferrets and there were no side effects.
