I have been trying to get rid of a mouth ulcer in my ferret, Bear, since September 2004. When I first noticed the ulcer, the roof of his mouth looked sore and red, I took him into our shelter vet. We cleaned his teeth and checked for any tooth problems. Put him on carafate and Amoxi. This helped for the mouth odor, but didn't clear up the ulcer.

We have since tried longer doses of Amoxi, then a month of Clavamox. Then tried Carafate, and Amoxi with Pediapred.

Then we went to the Carafate, Amoxi, Biaxin regime. Still no luck.

Our latest medication was with Sulfatrim (sp?). He developed a stuffy nose and we haven't been able to get rid of that. We did the Sulfatrim for a week. Then got him back on Amoxi. He was off Sulfatrim for a week and due to start back on it for another week. His mouth is even worse. He doesn't even want to eat his chicken gravy anymore. And he is so congested.

I'm at a loss as to what to do next. He has even seen one of our other shelter vets and we just don't know what to do next.

Please help me, I don't want to lose my Bear. We think he is about 5 years old. He came to the shelter as a stray, so we don't knwo for sure. We've had him for about 3 years.

Thank you,
Liz
