Remember that length of time matters in this regard. The body holds many minerals in it, for instance calcium in bones (as any mother who ever lost calcium in pregnancy knows), so for a while the body can use its own stores.

If I recall right Dr. Bruce Williams addressed this in the past, either on his site or in a past post. If memory serves he has been more lenient in that regard for ferrets who are terminally ill or severely ill and still needing to be stabilized. Sometimes risk factors just get weighed and one goes with tackling first whatever is the larger risk.
