Giving food prior to, or along with, the prednisone should be enough to prevent stomach irritation from prednisone. I've given pred for years without problem and never used carafate for that purpose.

They always got the pred mixed into a bit of chicken baby food. Worked great and they never even seemed to notice they were getting medication, though it still tasted bitter to me.
