What happened with the second vaccine? I ask because a normal vaccine response can involve acting a tad sick because of the desired response of the immune system.

When we have ferrets who have *large* allergic reactions to any two vaccines we personally have stopped vaccinating that individual.

One interesting study mentioned in _Biology and Diseases of the Ferret_ -- and this is from memory so make allowances -- looked at how much canine distemper threat existed if most animals in a colony were vaccinated; I seem to recall that it was 3/4 vaccinated. Having most vaccinated also left the unvaccinated ferrets safer. On the other hand, trying to vaccinate after the disease had already broken in a colony that had pretty much the inverse worked for only a few possibly because ferrets might have the disease for a enough time before showing symptoms that it has already been widely spread.
