Just remember to keep variation among ferrets in mind. We came close to losing Sherman when heavy cream did not agree with him, and I got a private note earlier today from someone's ferret who reacted so strong with intolerance that the ferret didn't make it.

At this point, given Sherman's crash I don't personally think I would again try cream on a ferret with a serious GI problem unless I gave Lactaid and unless I knew we'd be home for a few days.

(That was the crash that wound up taking us weeks to completely pull Sherman back from, the one in the archives where he had to be on something over 20 doses of meds a day for while.)

If memory serves and if this was the time that the cream caused problems for him, what happened was he got a GI infection on top of his IBD and along with other things we tried the cream and he just crashed quickly with the cream -- but more like a severe intolerance than an allergy. Then his infection worsened really badly -- I think that one wound up being in his throat as well as stomach and intestines after a while. I think that is the one where we also had to treat related mouth and upper throat ulcerations. He was a very sick little guy and for a while there he just couldn't catch a break, but he pulled through it to play again.

So, the point is that cream can be wonderful for some but for others it really can cause trouble, so it is important to just always recall that either result can occur.
