My ferret BoBo has had his tonsils removed as he had tonsilitis (diagnosed with endoscopy). His symptoms were increasingly frequent gagging/coughing. It sounded kind of like he had something stuck in his throat and was doing a tiny cough to clear it. He never threw up and it happened at odd times (like sometimes when he was eating, and sometimes when he was just laying there). According to my ferret vet (no names, but a well known expert), tonsil issues are not that uncommon. BoBo didn't need to be cut open, the vet could remove the tonsils through the mouth under aneasthesia. I would have a vet check it out.
Take Care,
Moscha (not a vet)
