Hi Debbi,
The vaccine reaction rate for the Fervac-d
distemper vaccine runs about 5%. Most of these
are mild to moderate reactions (vomiting/diarrhea).
The vaccine reaction rate for the Purevax distemper
vaccine runs about 1%. Most of these are mild to
moderate reactions. Only a VERY small percentage
have a severe reaction to either of these vaccines.
Distemper on the other hand is almost always fatal!
In my experience pre medicating with Benadryl does not
help prevent an allergic reaction. I recommend using
cortisone (dex/depo injection) as a pre medication before
vaccines in a ferret that has had a previous vaccine reaction.
Currently the Purevax distemper vaccine is on back order from
the manufacture. It is expected back at the end of May or
early June.
Hope that helps,
