I was told by our vet that our area is definitely prone to heartworm. Pretty much every animal that ends up in a shelter has it. Our rescue from the animal shelter (one of our bassets) had it, and our other basset was rescued from there by the Alabama Basset Hound Rescue Association and they had to have her treated for heartworm.

We're in Mobile (south AL).

A question struck me in this discussion of the Alabama ferret and outside. Is Alabama an area prone to heartworm? If so, then especially in a ferret who has been going outside a lot prevention is important.
