I have written before to the list about Bailey who at Xmas, showed signs of extreme lethargy. After some tests, we thought an enlarged spleen was the cause so he had a splenectomy. Since then he has been up and down - his symptoms show extreme lethargy, hind leg weakness, knuckling and shows a vaguesness about his presence - like he has a really bad headache. Generally he has shown some improvement after a course of antibiotics, but then he reverts fairly quickly back to the above symptoms.
My vet is now treating him with Septrin, which previously improved Bailey after only 4 days of treatment. He reverted back to being a 'normal' ferret - it was almost like a miracle as I'd almost given up. He had about 2 weeks of Septrin and kept well for about 3 weeks before starting to decline again. We have started him another a course of Septrin. Last week, Bailey couldn't even make it up one stair, yet after 3 days treatment he can make it up the whole flight again!
My vet now thinks this is a CNS problem brought on by a bacteria or prototzoa and has suggested Nocardiosis or Toxoplasmosis.
Does anyone else have any thoughts or suggestions about the treatment?
