He could have an ear infection but there are other things that may be causing it.

Ferrets don't sweat, so similar to rabbits they use their ears as air conditioning. The blood vessels in the ears expand and move to the surface to work as a cooling system. He may be too hot.

Also, I have a ferret who likes to suck on his sister's ears. Usually when he's stressed. Maybe at night one of the other ferrets is sucking on his ears.

If the red is deep in the ear and not on the exterior part, then it is most likely he has an infection. It is also possible that during cleaning it is being irritated.

If it doesn't seem to be bothering him (rubbing or itching his ears) then it may not be necessary to see a vet immediatly. If there is discharge or he is sratching or rubbing his ears then it would be in the ferret's best interest to see a vet as soon as possible.
