I've been researching theophylline (and a derivative - aminophylline) and have come across an EMS website that indicated "these are now reduced to a second in-line drug in the emergency setting **with the advent of more efficacious agents**....."

Does anyone know what the more "efficacious agents" are? There is no reference to them on the website and I haven't a clue where to begin looking for them. I've got an asthmatic kid going in for surgery (spleen) and would like to know if the "first" in-line drug has fewer side effects.

Thanks in advance.
