I have a ferret who does this kind of stuff, although no redness or swelling
anywhere. Jaws was infected with the flu, but had a bacterial infection in his ear
which we think might have went into his neuro system somehow. He moves kinda
like he has Parkinson's disease, twisting and turning when he moves, especially
when he looks up, and has a hard time with up and down, although he's gotten very
good at overcoming his handicap.

My vet thinks that he might have had a stroke of some kind, but we really don't
know anything except that it came about from influenza somehow. Jaws was initially
blind, but then regained his sight. He is almost totally deaf, although my wife thinks
he has some hearing. I have not seen any evidence of it myself, and I think he more
or less responds to vibrations instead of actual sounds.

Other than all these awful problems, he's doing great, eats like a horse, and is in
general active and in good health. While it is sad that he has these problems, I think
we lucked out with the level of health he ended up with. We lost two ferrets to these
ear infections, so we feel fortunate that Jaws is still here and enjoying life.
