You can use an ivermection mixture that your vet can make up for you since
it is cheaper that way, and the way to mix it is listed in Ferrets Rabbits
and Rodents. Or you can use the cat heartgard which works well if you have
multiple ferrets and an even number since no waste. You can give each 1/2
chewable tab once per month.

You are right it is the heartworm protection component that requires the
prescription. It does get some ticks not all, and it also gets the mites.
