If you expect him to not make it and if the vet can do a necropsy today the best thing may be to have a mercy shot with the vet doing an immediate necropsy -- less chance of tissue decomposition so more chance that the tissues will be good enough for the pathology to be most successful. His sacrifice of a few hours may save the rest in your shelter and household.
