My vet always checks for worms with my ferrets. They had them when they were younger so my vet checks each time to be safe. I don't know what the "checkup schedule" is for ferrets but I get mine an exam when they go for their rabies booster. The vet doesn't check anything invasive, I just bring a recent stool sample (which the ferts usually give in their travel cage on the way to the vet) and he checks it under the microscope.
