Were skin scrapings done by the vet? If too scratched I don't know if they'd be successful now or not, so ask the treating vet.

Is there any pattern in the redness or is it all just scabby? How much of the increase might be persistent scratching enlarging the area? Some ferrets really tear up mast cell growth locations though usually they are going to be smaller than you describe. Thumbnails vary in size. See:http://www.afip.org/ferrets/Mast/mastcell.html

Whether it is contagious or not will depend on the cause. If ringworm (which is actually a fungus) then others can get it and give it, including you, but there are other possible fits that are not a concern that way.

Time to get to the vet again.
