Having had a male block it isn't something I am personally wild about ever dealing with again. In our boy's case he had a combination of a diverticulum (pouch) of the bladder combined with cystine stones (a problem dealing with higher protein diets). It took him a year after his resulting bilateral hydronephrosis for him to repair enough to stop being gaunt.

If I had a male blocking now -- being a non-vet and alsohaving been through such a bad experience -- I think (as a non-professional) that I would be inclined to start both Lupron and melatonin if there were possible adrenal signs because they can help and are very safe. I'd also discuss meds like Proscar/Propecia with the treating vet, and I think I'd be inclined to want to check urine concentration, pH, and signs of blood or infection pretty much straight off.

There is a lot of prostate health in the Archives, esp. posts from AFERRETVET and I think there is an old compilation in the Files section.

Could you describe what you are seeing to help assess if he is having trouble urinating and how much ? Hopefully, it his signs are not as indicative as you are concerned that they may be.
