Subject: Possible DIM ?

I am posting this for the shelter I volunteer at. It's never an easy
decision to euthanize (coupled with the fact that the shelter director
has never had a case of DIM before) and we are wondering if A. this is
really DIM and B. should we euthanize the ferret.

Any input is appreciated. She's a darling ferret and we would hate to
euthanize her, BUT, if it's the right thing to do, it should be done
soon.

Hello All

I believe I may have a case of DIM here but need some input..

Female cinnamon blaze bib mitt approx 1-2.5 yrs From County shelter
3/20/5 along with cage mate.

Imrab 3 given at Co.shelter on 3/17/05

I inadvertently had her vetted on 4/11/05 and she was given another
rabies along with Fervac D pretreated w/benedryl .05cc 50.mg/mlIM with
no ill effects.

General exam temp 103 pulse 220 resp 70 =

Kibble mix is TF, Pro plan kitten,Ferret store natural and Innova EVO
mix Daphney has been here since 3/20/05 is very happy and has shown no
signs of shelter stress. All the ferrets get daily playtime and
attention. =

She is caged with 6 other ferrets all 1 yr or younger. All good health. =

Symptoms started Sat eve. 7/30 felt warm and lethargic. Sun am started
Amoxi .5 cc BID Poop good eating and drinking ok warm to touch.

Mon am temp 105 lethargic still eating kibble and drinking ,seemingly
stiff.

Took to vet Mon. as suspected, possible DIM.. He advised stop Amoxi and
have her necropsied and sent to Dr Williams, after review of blood work
results .Tues. .

Results WBC 16.9 Platelet count 909 =

all else normal

(The chem results were inconclusive lab error?)

As of last night I decided to treat her in lieu of euthaniza. =

Per vets suggestion I have started her back on the Amoxi..5cc bid,
Metacam.05cc bid Lactated ringers 25-30cc bib Baby food and Carnivore
care mix approx 80 cc per day Pedialyte =

This morn her temp was 105.2 before any meds

Resp.85

So she has high temp, elevated WBC, increased resp.,stiffness, lethargy,
decreased appetite

No other obvious symptoms at this point. She is alert and Poop good..

Vet adv bring her back Fri for additional blood work( can do it in house
on Friday )

She had an acupuncture treatment this morning.

I have no objection to euthaniza with a diagnosis of DIM, and having
pathology samples sent to Dr. Garner or Dr Williams.

Should I consider these findings conclusive and euthanize? My vet is
leaving this up to me ..

I noticed on the AFA medical alert that they recommend supportive care,
and a combination of drugs, none of which my vet has recommended. I gave
him a copy of the report , and he said he was familiar with it.

Any ideas or suggestions?
