Subject: Losing a nail -- things to look for

Hi, everyone,
Yesterday when I got home from work I let the ferrets
out as always. Nyssa had a nail caught in the
hammock. I went for the nail clippers but before I
could get back and free her Nyssa had freed herself --
by literaly ripping out the nail.
I rushed Nyssa to the local emergency clinic which,
thankfully, has good ferret-knowledgeable vets. The
completely exposed quick was treated with diluted
betadine solution and Nyssa will get Clavamox for 10
days to prevent infection.
The weird thing to me was that Nyssa ran around like
nothing had happened. I asked the vet about this and
he said that animals with late stage cancer don't show
pain the same way as other animals. BTW, I hadn't
told him how long Nyssa has had lymphoma -- only that
she has it. The "late stage" was his own conclusion,
which was very sad confirmation of what I pretty much
knew already.
My questions: Naturally the toe (exposed quick) looks
nasty and is covered with dried blood. What should I
look for? What would tell me if the toe was in
trouble?
I'm on completely new ground here. I've never had
something like this happen to one of my ferrets before
so any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Caity and the fantastic five
