One of the topics he covered was heart disease in ferrets, and I recall him
saying that even with cardiomyopathy, ferrets don't cough. The only time
they cough with a heart condition is with heartworms.

My Buddy was diagnosed almost two years ago with a heart murmur and
cardiomyopathy.

Confirmed with x-ray, ultrasound, echocardiogram, and EKG.

He was checked for heart worms and non were seen. We do not have heartworms
here, unless an animal travels out of the area.

His first and only symptom was a cough.

Until we got his meds adjusted to keep the fluid from his lungs and around
the heart, he coughed a lot. That was sometimes followed by panicked
breathing attacks, requiring nitro in his ear.

I soon learned if he coughed, especially during the night, it was time to
give an extra few doses of lasix, and add the nitro for a day or two. Just
my experience with one ferret.
