Hello Mike-
I might be able to help out here,

A coughing reflex can occur when the partial hair / hairballs back up. We
in fact had a ferret in the shelter that had so much hair it entirely
filled the stomach cavity and had little tails that extended up into the
passge from the throat to stomach and again into the pyloris. The vet
saved this monster to illustrate the need for hair ball remedy.

The other possibility is that if they are partial blockages the float
around within the stomach it *may* cause a coughing reflex.

The same abrasive action from partial blockages rubbing against the tissue
is what does cause ulcerations in the gut.

On the other hand there are SEVERAL cardio coughs depending on which type
of cardiomyopathy the ferret may have!
