I've seen a map of the areas where heartworm infection was reported and it is highest along the Southeast states that border the Gulf, along the East coast states that border the Atlantic (though it thins out as it gets up near NY) and along the Mississippi river border states. The thinnest concentration, if I recall correctly, was in Montana and the surrounding area. And of course Florida, where I'm at, is the worst!

I'm sure you have little to worry about from heartworms in the high desert.
