Yes Heartworm treatment is a preventive measure and given everymonth with todays heartwom treatments,If you havent had a ferret as a kit( the same rule applies with all animals that are given the HWT,)YOU MUST have a test done first to make sure they havent got it as you can do damage if you are giving heartworm preventment treatment to an animal that has heart worm, and if they have HW well than a completely different med is required.
Like I have mentioned I use Revolution for kittens up to 2.5kg,this covers worms,Hworms, scoptic mange mites, fleas, ticks eggs the whole lot!! It is a great product and I dont know of any other on the market that gets rid of so many things and with this it does the worms so there is no hassle of trying to get worm meds into them it is great!! from Belinda.....

Does one treat for heartworms periodically, no matter what, as a sort of preventative maintainance; only when suspicious symptoms, such a cough, show; or only when heartworms are actually diagnosed? Is a cough, which it seems can have at least fifteen or twenty causes, the only symptom?
